What it looks like
The reason it keeps slipping
You didn’t run out of discipline. You ran out of room.
You answered the message. You covered the shift. You did the thing nobody thanked you for. By the time the day came back round to you there was nothing left to give it — so the run moved to tomorrow, the book stayed shut, and the light stayed on past midnight.
Not one of those is a discipline problem. That is what a list of forty things sounds like at eleven at night.
Why three
A list you can fail is a list you will negotiate with.
Other trackers let you add a fortieth habit, then shame you for the thirty-nine you dropped. Onus holds three.
Your whole day fits on one screen.
Three lines. Tick what you kept. That is the entire app.
A bad day cannot erase the good ones.
Keep one of your three and the count holds. Oni rests, and nothing comes off your record.
You end up with a creature nobody else has.
Twelve forms. Which one you get depends on what you keep.
Somebody else is counting on you tonight.
One Oni, two of you. Nobody wants to be the one who missed.
Proof, every night, that you did it.
Oni draws you a card when you close the day. Dated, stamped, yours.
The line, said out loud
Keeping is free. It always will be.
Not free for a fortnight. Free permanently — because the part of this that makes it work should never be the part that is held back.
- Your three daily non-negotiables
- Marking them, every day, for as long as you like
- Rewriting the three, once a week
- Sharing one Oni with one other person
- Oni, and every one of his twelve forms
- A mend for a day you missed, earned and never sold
- A card every day you finish
- The last seven days of your history
What costs is your history further back than a week, the weekly, monthly and yearly promises, the week read back, the read on which of your three slips most often, a written summary of each month and year, and the shared record if someone is in it with you. None of it can gate a day you kept.
Start tonight
Three promises. Twenty seconds. Nothing to lose.
Nothing about tomorrow is going to be quieter than today was. It will ask for the same things, from the same person, in the same order.
There is no trial to start and no card to enter — keeping is free and stays free. Write your three tonight, and by this time next month you will have a record you can hold and a creature that grew out of it.

Why this keeps happening
It was never the habit. It was what the app did when you missed one.
The pattern is always the same. Four days in, something ordinary happens — a late finish, a bad night, a week that got away — and the app answers by deleting the run. The number goes back to zero, the calendar fills with red, and the thing that was supposed to be evidence of who you are becomes evidence of the opposite.
After that nobody opens it. Not because the habit stopped mattering, but because the app has become somewhere you go to be told you failed, and the safest move is not to look. That is not a discipline problem either. That is a scoreboard punishing you for one bad day and calling it motivation.
Onus answers a bad day differently, and the difference is mechanical rather than tonal. Keep any one of your three and the count holds. A day you say nothing on is unknown, not failed — not opening an app has never been evidence that you broke a promise. And underneath the count sits a total that cannot go back: come back after four days away and the number waiting for you is how many days you have kept, not how many you did not. Oni rests, nothing turns red, and the keeping is free permanently rather than free until a trial runs out — because the part of this that makes it work should never be the part that gets taken away.
Questions
What people ask before they install it.
What are non-negotiables?
A non-negotiable is a promise you keep regardless of how the day went — training, lights out by a set hour, five hundred words. Unlike a habit on a list of forty, it is not optional on a bad day and it is not up for renegotiation at eleven at night. Onus holds three at a time, and they can only be rewritten at the weekly review.
Is there a habit tracker without streaks?
Onus counts the days you keep, but that count is built to be hard to lose and it is never the whole score. Keep any one of your three and it holds. Take a planned rest day and it is stepped over. Say nothing at all and the day is treated as unknown rather than failed, because not opening an app is not evidence you broke a promise. Only a day you open and mark missed yourself starts the count again — and even then nothing is deleted. Your total days kept and your longest run are permanent, and those are the numbers Onus shows you on the way back.
How many habits should you track at once?
Three. A list long enough to fail is a list you start negotiating with, and every habit you add makes the others easier to drop. Onus caps the daily list at three and puts longer-range goals on separate weekly, monthly and yearly lists so they do not compete with today.
Is Onus free?
Keeping is free permanently, not free for a trial period. That includes your three daily non-negotiables, marking them every day for as long as you like, rewriting them once a week, sharing one Oni with one other person, all twelve creature forms, a mend for a day you missed, a card every evening you close the day, and the last seven days of your record. What costs is your history further back than a week, the weekly, monthly and yearly promises, the week read back, the read on which of your three slips most often, a written summary of each month and year, and the shared record if someone is in it with you. None of it can gate a day you kept.
Does Onus work offline?
Yes. Your three lines and every mark you make are stored on the device and never leave it, so the app works with no connection at all. The evening reminder is registered directly with iOS rather than sent from a server, so it arrives whether or not you are online. An account is set up once, at the end of onboarding, and exists only so Oni survives a new phone.
